About this book

Water management and political power meet in George Edmundson's account of the Netherlands, published in 1922. Its opening connects reclaimed marshland, dykes and canals with the development of Holland and Zeeland. A prologue traces medieval counts and rival factions before the main narrative turns to Burgundian and Habsburg rule, the revolt against Spain and the formation of the Dutch Republic.

The chapters follow government, overseas trading companies, commerce, science and art alongside wars and diplomacy. In the middle excerpt, John de Witt negotiates a changing European balance after Charles II returns to the English throne, while Louis XIV's ambitions raise concerns over the Dutch frontier. Later chapter headings carry the account through the Batavian Republic, the formation of the kingdom, the separation from Belgium and Queen Wilhelmina's reign. Readers seeking a connected history of Dutch institutions and foreign relations can follow that chronological structure, with maps and a bibliography identified in the contents.
