About this book

Royal families, revolutions and changes of government shape Elizabeth Wormeley Latimer's account of France between 1830 and 1890. Published in 1892, it opens by looking back at Louis XVIII's return after Waterloo and the competing expectations of the nobility and middle classes. The chapters then follow Charles X, Louis Philippe, Louis Napoleon, the Second Republic and the formation of the Third Republic, placing prominent lives within the country's political upheavals.

Latimer combines political narrative with scenes of court life and public ceremony. Her account of the Suez Canal describes the practical work of supplying water and building towns, then turns to Empress Eugénie's arrival at the opening celebrations. Such details give readers interested in European history a view of how rulers, engineering projects and diplomatic display shared the public stage in the nineteenth century.
