About this book
The book Horace is by Rev. W. Tuckwell, M.A. The contents list names sections called Struggle, Success, Satires and Epistles, Odes and Epodes, and Swan-Song, among others. The text names Quintus Horatius Flaccus, the “old popular Horace” of Tennyson.
The text places Brutus at Athens, residing, as we should say, in his old University, and drawing to himself the passionate admiration of its most brilliant undergraduates, among them the younger Cicero and Horace. The text says that had the author's genius found expression in these Conversations only, he would not have become through nineteen centuries the best beloved of Latin poets. The writer recalls that, exactly fifty-eight years ago, as senior boy at Winchester, he recited a Satire publicly and received the Queen's silver medal for elocution at Warden Barter's hands.
