About this book

Caesar: A Sketch is by James Anthony Froude. The preface says the work is called a “sketch” because the materials do not exist for a portrait which shall be at once authentic and complete. The preface lists the original authorities for the life of Caesar as his own writings, the speeches and letters of Cicero, and the eighth book of the “Commentaries” on the wars in Gaul.

The text describes Cicero advocating young Roscius’s cause with skill and courage, and denouncing Chrysogonus as an accomplice in an act of atrocious villainy. Sylla showed no resentment, and probably felt none, and lived for a year after his retirement and died 78 B.C., while writing memoirs which have been unfortunately lost. The text says Caesar was across the Alps and that his legions were scattered between Trèves, Auxerre, and Sens, far from the Roman frontier.
