About this book

Affectionate teasing and small acts of care fill John Ruskin's letters to the sisters at the Thwaite, Coniston. Albert Fleming selected the correspondence for publication, with many messages addressed to Susie. In the opening letters, Ruskin recommends passages from his own writing, quotes Shakespeare and writes from Assisi about stories of St. Francis. His concern for his friends gives literary discussion a personal setting.

Later letters turn to Spenser's poetry, flowers, birds and the practical demands of life at Brantwood. Ruskin describes a stiff neck, gardeners in the greenhouse and money set aside for Sheffield Museum. These everyday details sit beside his wish that Susie should be happy and his gratitude for her kindness. Readers interested in correspondence can find here a mixture of playful conversation, reading advice and attention to the natural world, all shaped by a longstanding friendship.
