The fifth Hardy Boys case pulls the brothers far from Bayport and drops them into the snowbound mountains of Montana. Their father, detective Fenton Hardy, has been hurt while tracking gold stolen from a mining camp, so Frank and Joe head west to finish what he started. A blizzard, a pack of hungry wolves, and a ruthless outlaw gang stand between them and a fortune buried according to an old miner’s cryptic directions. Leslie McFarlane, writing as Franklin W. Dixon in 1928, gives the story a rough frontier edge that sets it apart from the boys’ usual seaside scrapes. It remains one of the more atmospheric entries in the original run.
