About this book

The book that launched the Hardy Boys, this is the debut case for teenage brothers Frank and Joe, amateur sleuths in the seaside town of Bayport. A red-haired thief is working the area, and when forty thousand dollars vanishes from the crumbling Tower Mansion, suspicion falls on the father of the boys' close friend. Determined to clear an innocent man, Frank and Joe chase down cryptic clues, dodge real danger, and race to expose the true culprit before the wrong person pays. First published in 1927 under the house name Franklin W. Dixon, it set the template for decades of juvenile detective fiction with its quick pace and tidy, puzzle-driven plotting.
