About this book
A story recounts Charles II returning from Hyde Park on foot with only two courtiers and meeting James Duke of York coming home from the hunt on Hounslow Heath. The account names Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough, among the Park’s habitués and describes the Duchess of Buckingham as another impressive figure.
The description of Hyde Park under Queen Anne asks the reader to replace well-kept grounds with thickets and brushwood growing on marshy ground. An anecdote explains a German visitor’s surprising description of copper beeches as a literal translation of the German word blutbuche. The account of Spring Gardens recalls two women keeping cows behind Carlton House Terrace until 1904 and charging one penny for a cup of warm milk.
