About this book

The Department of Balance gives a newborn a second shadow after her birth costs her other mother, Beau, her life. The surviving mother goes straight to the office to appeal, but the receptionist calls the assignment standard procedure. Marisa Crane's speculative novel opens with this newly bereaved widow trying to protect her baby from an automatic penalty.
