I Must Betray You by Ruta Sepetys is a young adult historical novel set in 1989 Romania, in the final months of Nicolae Ceausescu’s regime. The narrator is a teenage boy blackmailed into informing on his neighbours, who has to decide what kind of person he is going to be in a country where almost everyone is forced to lie.

Sepetys writes carefully researched historical fiction for young readers and this is one of her strongest books.
