About this book
Idling in Italy, subtitled Studies of Literature and of Life, is by Joseph Collins. The preface says that nothing obstacled the pleasure of the writer so much when first going to Italy as unfamiliarity with its literature. The preface says that everyone who would add to his spiritual stature and his emotional equanimity in Italy should have some intimacy with the Bible, with mythology, and with Italian writers, especially the poets.
The book discusses a poem entitled Inno a Satana (A Hymn to Satan), published under the pseudonym of Enotrio Romano and described as irreligious or materialistic. The book says the Odi barbare (Barbaric Odes) called forth the most vicious criticism, and that Carducci met his critics with the "Ça ira." The writer says that Samuel Butler's life was one of rebellion and resignation, of contention and strife, of unhappiness and unyieldingness, of disappointment and suspicion.
