About this book
The Humour of Homer and Other Essays is a book whose nucleus is a collection of essays by Samuel Butler, originally published in 1904 under the title Essays on Life, Art and Science. The introduction says The Humour of Homer was originally delivered as a lecture at the Working Men's College in Great Ormond Street on the 30th January, 1892. The introduction says another essay, The Humour of Homer, and a biographical sketch of the author, kindly contributed by Mr. Henry Festing Jones, are now added to the collection.
The text says Butler, writing home to his people, adds the comment “You may imagine what I felt.” The text describes a gentle, little old man who sat on the doorstep of the main door, mending vestments. The text says the evidence given in a preceding article shows that the germ-cells issuing from a parent's body can, and do, respond to profound impressions made on the somatic cells.
