About this book
Denis Cleeve grows up near the Brendon hills, watching ships pass along the coast while his father loses himself in books. His tutor is equally devoted to learning, and his friend Simon Powell feeds his imagination with old legends. Then a remark from the estate steward reveals an uncle Denis has never heard of: Botolph Cleeve, a London merchant who quarrelled with his father years before.
In Idonia, Arthur Frederick Wallis follows the young man into a city where romantic hopes collide with the need to earn a living. Denis tells the story himself, with room for embarrassment as well as adventure. During a tense meeting with Idonia, his attempt to explain himself becomes an admission that he has only twelve shillings and dislikes the thought of trade. Family estrangement, scholarly eccentricity and youthful pride shape a historical romance with a comic interest in money and manners.
