About this book
Deep snow slows Georges St. Georges as he rides towards Dijon with his little daughter beneath his cloak. The cavalry lieutenant has been recalled to Paris, carrying royal orders that dictate his route and the households where he must stop. Dorine's mother died at her birth, and her father has cared for her ever since. At the city gate, his urgent demand for entry gives way to a warmer exchange with the watchman's wife, who worries about the child.
John Bloundelle-Burton places a father's responsibilities within a historical adventure shaped by royal commands and military service. A later passage finds St. Georges aboard an admiral's ship after release from a galley. Questions about his former rank, family background and faith suggest how much his circumstances have changed. Readers can follow the contrast between his position as an officer and his dependence on the judgment and kindness of others.
