About this book
Illustrations of the Croton Aqueduct is a book by F. B. Tower, dedicated to the inhabitants of the city of New-York. The preface says the views given of the important points on the line of the Croton Aqueduct are from sketches taken for the author's own satisfaction. Plate V is a section of the Aqueduct showing the manner of constructing it across valleys, or where the natural surface of the ground falls below the plane of grade, and the text says that in such cases the Aqueduct is supported upon a foundation wall of stone laid dry.
Dr. Hare of Philadelphia, replying to a letter, states that after using the Schuylkill water for 25 years in his laboratory he has never perceived the slightest indication of the presence of lead. The Water Commissioners received communications from other sources suggesting plans for supplying the city with water, and one suggestion was that water might be obtained from the Passaic Falls, at a distance of about eighteen miles from the city, in New-Jersey.
