About this book
The Modern Railroad by Edward Hungerford sets out to explain something of the intricacy and involved detail of railroad operation. The preface says the book gives little or no attention to railroad finance, politics, or quarrels involving employees, commissions, and shippers. An account of early experiments describes a crude engine derailing on its trial trip and entering regular service after repairs to its wheels.
The discussion of train dispatching explains how telegraphed orders specify destinations, other trains to be met, and the meeting points. Further orders must be receipted for as the train proceeds, and headquarters may issue orders partly or entirely cancelling previous instructions.
