Against Heresies, Volume 1, is the major work of Irenaeus of Lyon (c.130-c.202), the early Church Father who wrote to refute the Gnostic sects of the second century. This volume of the standard 1885 Ante-Nicene Fathers translation opens his systematic exposure and rebuttal of Gnostic teaching, defending what he held to be the apostolic faith. Irenaeus is one of the most important theologians of the early Church, and Against Heresies is a primary source for both orthodox doctrine and the Gnostic ideas it opposed.
