About this book
Is Polite Society Polite? and Other Essays is a book by Julia Ward Howe. The preface says that, quite late in the fifties, its writer mentioned to Theodore Parker the desire to give living expression to thoughts and to lend to written words the interpretation of the voice. The text quotes Theodore Parker as saying that the great desire of the age is for vocal expression.
The text says that De Balzac's novel called Father Goriot tells the story of a man of humble origin who grows rich by trade, educates his daughters for fashionable life, marries them to men of condition, and portions them abundantly. The text says it has been heard on good authority that people of wealth and position in our large cities sometimes deposit their aged and helpless parents in asylums. The text says that the sculptures of classic Greece were primarily the embodiment of its popular theology and the record of its patriotic heroism.
