About this book
A young man known as Snow Gregory is found shot in a Lambeth gutter on a night of storm and snow. In his pockets are a little tin box and a playing card, the Jack of Clubs. Three months later Colonel Dan Boundary, a big, slow-spoken and very rich man whose wealth is widely resented, receives a stained card of the same kind, with the words "Jack o' Judgment" written on its margin.
Stafford King, the grave young chief of the Criminal Intelligence Department, has spent three years trying to break the Boundary Gang, and the colonel's invitation to talk with him is only the first move in a long contest. Maisie White, a young woman close to King, is pulled into the trouble, and the cards keep coming.
Published in 1920, this London crime novel does not ask who did it so much as who the avenger behind the cards might be. Edgar Wallace builds it from short, fast chapters with titles such as "The Decoy" and "In the Turkish Baths", set among syndicates, detectives and rival schemers.
