About this book

On a wet night in London, Robert Grell, an American explorer, diplomat and millionaire, sits in his club on the eve of his wedding to Lady Eileen Meredith, daughter of a duke. He shows a friend a string of pearls meant as a surprise gift, then asks him to cover for him on the telephone while he keeps a private engagement. Before long Grell is found dead in his study, and the case falls to Superintendent Heldon Foyle of Scotland Yard.

Frank Froest published the novel in 1913, and its strength is the detail of police work: telephone messages and wires to Liverpool, river searches by motor-boat, a gambling house raid in the East End, and the steady, dry partnership between Foyle and the gloomy Inspector Green. A mysterious woman called Petrovska keeps slipping out of reach, and more than one person confesses to the crime.

Readers who enjoy early twentieth-century London detective stories will find a brisk, twisting puzzle here.
