About this book
A lunch basket containing only scraps starts a quarrel at Brincliffe School, where established boarders resent the arrival of boys who go home each day. Florence Coombe introduces Jack Brady, a weekly boarder whose good humour stands out amid the anger. When insults and a thrown basket turn a prank into trouble, Jack urges restraint and openly admits his own side's part in the incident.
The school story follows rival camps through jokes, grievances and awkward choices about loyalty. In a later scene, Cadbury agrees to keep Grey's involvement in a chicken escapade quiet after the younger boy admits his fear of punishment. Lively exchanges between pupils carry much of the humour, while small acts of fairness test the pressure to take sides. Readers interested in children's school fiction will find a close look at friendship, responsibility and the unwritten rules of a classroom community.
