About this book
A breakfast dispute sets the Green Forest buzzing when Buster Bear frightens Little Joe Otter into dropping a freshly caught trout. Buster treats the encounter as a joke and eats the fish, while Little Joe sees a bully who needs a lesson. With Billy Mink nearby, the otter finds a way to spoil the bear's fishing. Thornton W. Burgess builds this children's story around animals whose tempers and claims to territory are as lively as their woodland habits.
Short chapters move between the Laughing Brook, the forest and Farmer Brown's home. Blacky the Crow and Sammy Jay stir up curiosity, drawing both Buster and Farmer Brown's boy toward a meeting watched by their animal neighbors. The humor comes from mistaken assumptions about who should fear whom. Young readers can follow the quarrels and practical jokes while noticing how hunger, pride and rumor affect the way each character behaves.
