About this book
Jacquard Weaving and Designing by T. F. Bell presents material drawn from art and technical training together with practical experience in textile manufacturing and designing. The cloth discussion identifies curtains and cotton vestings among the goods frequently woven with a texture also used for carpets. The pattern explanation assigns black squares to the face warp raised to the cloth's face and shaded squares to the back warp raised to the face.
The instructions for a full harness require the pattern to occupy a line of design paper for each warp thread and each pick of weft. The harness discussion states that greater divergence from the vertical makes the shed more irregular. The advice on weak yarn calls for reducing friction to a minimum and says the yarn and doups should work well if their initial quality is fair and friction is reduced.
