About this book

John Marr and Other Poems is by Herman Melville, with an introductory note by Henry Chapin. The contents list John Marr and Other Sailors, Bridegroom Dick, Tom Deadlight, Jack Roy, Sea Pieces, The Haglets and The Aeolian Harp, among other titles. The contents also list Poems from Timoleon and a supplement of Poems from Battle Pieces.

The poem To Ned asks where is the world we roved, Ned Bunn, and names Marquesas and glenned isles that be authentic Edens in a Pagan sea. The text asks whether the Unionists and Secessionists were but as Guelphs and Ghibellines, and says Let us pray that the terrible historic tragedy of our time may not have been enacted without instructing our whole beloved country through terror and pity. A poem calls Marlena a land of shades and streams, a land of many delights, with shores dark and bold.

Herman Melville

Herman Melville (1819–1891) was an American writer who drew heavily from his own experiences as a merchant sailor and whaler in the Pacific. He produced novels, short stories, and poetry that examined moral complexity and the sea, though he remained relatively obscure during his lifetime and saw renewed recognition only after his death.
