About this book

Silver sleigh bells, golden wedding bells, alarms and solemn tolling give the opening poem its changing pulse. Edgar Allan Poe builds each section from repeated sounds, turning the noise of bells into merriment, happiness, fear and melancholy. The collection also includes Eulalie, Annabel Lee, The Raven and other poems that move between affection, loss, dreams and unease. In The Raven, a weary speaker reads late at night, remembers Lenore and hears a tapping at his door before a bird enters his chamber.

The verse ranges from short songs and sonnets to the imagined heavens of Al Aaraaf, where stars, spirits, luminous columns and a diamond window fill the scene. This edition pairs the poems with illustrations by Edmund Dulac. Readers interested in how poetry works through the ear can follow Poe's recurring words and shifting rhythms, while the sea, night skies and dreamlike buildings give his emotional subjects a visible setting.
