John Silence Stories

Dr. John Silence is a physician of a peculiar kind, treating patients whose afflictions are spiritual rather than bodily and whose cases lead him into hauntings, possessions, and older powers loose in the world. Blackwood built these stories around a calm, sympathetic investigator, then surrounded him with a mounting dread drawn from lonely houses, foreign forests, and the thin places where the natural and supernatural meet. Written in 1908, the collection helped popularize the figure of the psychic detective and shows Blackwood at his atmospheric best, more interested in awe and unease than in cheap shocks.
