About this book
Journal and Letters of Philip Vickers Fithian presents the journal and letters of a plantation tutor of the Old Dominion. The account of plantation buildings says offices near the great house served as counting rooms, schoolrooms and sleeping quarters for the family's sons, among other purposes. The account says kitchens, wash-houses, dairies, smoke-houses and other housekeeping offices were usually placed farther away to keep the mansion cool and free of cooking noise and odors.
A journal entry records warm, very damp weather and remarks that the writer has seen no mosquitoes in the province, as far as the writer can recollect.
