About this book
The narrator remembers an old red cradle made by their father large enough for the children to crowd into, with rocking and French ballads learned from their mother. The childhood recollection places the mother nearby in her sewing chair, joining in the singing, and recalls Aunt Abbie joining the song as well.
The account of a homeward journey records the joy of hearing the Michigan's whistle and seeing the steamer approach the dock. The voyage takes the travellers onto Lake Erie, among blocks of floating ice and the cries of sea gulls soaring overhead. The account of gales describes wrecks towed into the harbour and left until repaired enough to reach dry docks in cities.
