The stonemason Jude Fawley dreams of a scholar's life but is thwarted at every turn by poverty, an unhappy marriage, and his doomed, unconventional love for his freethinking cousin Sue Bridehead, in Hardy's bleakest and most controversial novel. A savage attack on the cruelties of marriage laws, class barriers, and social hypocrisy, it caused such outrage that Hardy abandoned fiction for poetry.
