About this book

Soldiers boarding ships at Southampton and families waving from the shore give these poems an immediate sense of public events felt in private lives. Thomas Hardy sets military departure beside the worries of wives, the memories of an ageing officer and the loss of a young drummer far from home. The voices shift between speakers, allowing grief, doubt and attachment to emerge through particular scenes rather than a single account of war.

The collection also includes poems of pilgrimage, shorter reflections on love and time, adaptations from other writers and a closing section of retrospect. In the shorter poems, a broken appointment becomes a test of compassion, while another poem asks two people to speak honestly as the years pass. Readers interested in English verse can explore how Hardy moves from crowded docks and distant landscapes to the small, painful negotiations of affection.
