About this book

Sixteen-year-old Judith tends lobster traps from an old dory to support her mother and younger sister. Her sister Janet, whom she calls Blossom, cannot walk, and the family hopes to buy her a wheelchair with money from the catch. A poor lobster season threatens that plan. When a friendly child from the hotel speaks to Judith on the beach, the meeting brings out both her fierce protectiveness and her longing for Blossom to share other children’s pleasures.

Annie Hamilton Donnell builds this sea story around work, family affection and the difficult choices that scarcity can bring. Out on the bay, Blossom spots a school of mackerel, and Judith sees a chance to increase their savings. Yet an old promise to share such a catch with her friend Jemmy complicates her excitement. Young readers encounter a working coastal life in which friendship and generosity face the pressure of need.
