About this book

A patchwork quilt becomes a test of patience, enterprise and keeping promises when ten-year-old Johnny agrees to sew blocks for his mother. The Marshall family faces a tight winter, and he wants to earn enough to buy Todd Walters' rifle. Sewing feels embarrassing to Johnny, who hides his work from visitors. His answer is to recruit other boys into a secret sewing society and pay them to finish part of the job, upsetting his mother's expectations.

Annie Fellows Johnston pairs this family story with a bicycle competition in Bardstown. Judge Parker offers the coveted prize to a boy who chooses a business motto from the Bible and puts it into practice for two months. Abbot selects a verse about diligence as he plans to sell vegetables. These children's stories make everyday ambitions the starting point for lessons about work, responsibility and the value of a promise.
