About this book

Alice MacGowan's Judith of the Cumberlands is dedicated to her mountain friends, people of lonely cabins, horseback trails and small settlements in high valleys. Judith Barrier, who lives on her own farm with Uncle Jephthah Turrentine next to the old Bonbright place, talks with Creed Bonbright in the village of Hepzibah after some boys have been arrested. She worries about telling Uncle Jep and about her mule Pete. Creed says he will speak for the prisoners and leads her mules up the road while she rides.

In another passage the farm household is shown after Creed has gone: the twins work over a colt in the pasture, old Jephthah shuts himself in his room, and Iley looks in at the door. A further passage follows a man who throws his belongings into a wagon in haste, then finds two chairs empty with the ropes lying cut beside them. Dialect spelling marks Judith's speech.
