About this book
At a village tavern near the Pennsylvania oil regions, a discussion of horse thieves prompts a traveler to tell an unlikely story: he once helped a man carry away a meeting-house. The speaker, a New England farmer, recalls working for Jedwort, whose hunger for money has left his property shabby and his family struggling. His account of the household gives the unlikely theft a personal cost, especially for Jedwort's wife and children.
J. T. Trowbridge builds this comic short story around a miser's schemes and the people caught up in them. Disputed ownership gives Jedwort room to maneuver, while neighbors object and his son Dave challenges his behavior. The narrator's dry remarks and the characters' sharp exchanges keep the telling lively. Beneath the village spectacle lies a criticism of treating savings as more valuable than education, comfort or respect within a family.
