About this book
Knots is a study of marlinespike seamanship covering bends, hitches, ties, fastenings and splices, with chapters on cordage, matting, hammock making and wire steel work. The discussion explains that a tie may be called a knot, bend or hitch according to its construction and the circumstances in which it is used. The Magnus Hitch instructions describe securing a rope to a spar by taking turns around the spar and passing the end through the last bight.
The Marlinespike Hitch is used to pull the turns of a seizing taut with a marlinespike or to hook tackle to a rope where a small pull is required. The instructions for a cringle describe unlaying a single strand from a rope, whipping both ends and reeving the strand through an eyelet-hole in the sail.
