About this book
Knowledge Is Power, by Charles Knight, is described on its title as a view of the productive forces of modern society, and the results of labour, capital, and skill. An extract from the introduction says that the author, without giving the volume the formal shape of a treatise on Political Economy, wishes to convey the broad parts of that science in a somewhat desultory manner, but one which is not altogether devoid of logical arrangement. The text sets out conditions necessary for the production of Utility, among them that there shall be Labour and that there shall be accumulation of former labour, or Capital.
The text says the bee wanders from flower to flower, but it is to labour for the honey. The text says that the polluted stream in time came to be known as Fleet Ditch, which Pope described as the king of dykes, than whom no sluice of mud with deeper sable blots the silver flood. The text says the system of sewers was begun in 1756.
