About this book
Landmarks in French Literature is a book by Lytton Strachey, with London and 1912 on its opening page. The contents list names, among others, The Middle Ages, The Renaissance, The Romantic Movement and The Age of Criticism. The first chapter says that, with a very few exceptions, every word in the French vocabulary comes straight from the Latin.
The text says that, unlike Villehardouin, whose chronicle shows hardly a trace of personal feeling, Joinville speaks of himself unceasingly. The text calls Le Roman de la Rose a curious poem and says its first part was composed by Guillaume de Lorris, a young scholar. The text says Fontenelle, the nephew of Corneille, attacked the miraculous basis of Christianity in his Histoire des Oracles, as early as 1687. The text says Baudelaire's small volume, Les Fleurs du Mal, gives him a unique place among the masters of the poetic art.
