About this book
Lawrence and Storrs arrive at Jiddah, identified as the port of Mecca on the Red Sea, in October 1916. The Sherif’s second son Abdulla comes to meet the two Englishmen on a white mare, with a guard of richly armed slaves on foot around him. Feisal has eight thousand men, including eight hundred camel-fighters, while the rest are hill men serving only under their own tribal sheikhs and near their own territory.
Lawrence judges the tribesmen fit only for irregular fighting and defence, describing their independence as an obstacle to fighting a pitched battle under a single command. Allenby asks whether Lawrence can link up with him at Jericho and continue the advance north to Amman. Lawrence says that he cannot manage at present without a great deal of help.
