About this book
The foreword describes leaving America with a photographic colleague and two other assistants to gather information and secure a pictorial record of a struggle extending from the North Sea to Arabia. The account records Thomas Edward Lawrence's birth in Carnarvon County and describes his attendance at Oxford High School and preparation for entering the university. The description of the Hedjaz notes that some uplands have barely enough grass for sheep pasture and that a few more settled tribes tend flocks rather than breeding camels or horses.
Lawrence's plans include winning the confidence of rival tribes and inducing them to forget past differences and unite under Hussein, his sons and other shereefs, in the hope of helping the Allies win the war.
