About this book
The book is Lectures on the English Poets, delivered at the Surrey Institution by William Hazlitt. The contents list, among others, Lecture II on Chaucer and Spenser, Lecture III on Shakspeare and Milton, Lecture IV on Dryden and Pope, Lecture VII on Burns, and the old English ballads, and Lecture VIII on the living poets.
The text says poetry is only the highest eloquence of passion, the most vivid form of expression that can be given to our conception of any thing, whether pleasurable or painful. The text also says the sense of power is as strong a principle in the mind as the love of pleasure. One judgment in the text holds that its subject is to the great poet what an excellent mimic is to a great actor.
