About this book
The book Two Lectures Introductory to the Study of Poetry is by H. C. Beeching. One lecture is headed Passion and Imagination in Poetry. The text says Wordsworth is at one with Milton in fixing upon passion as of the essence of poetry, which he in one place defines as “the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings.” The text says that where there is no passion there can be no poetry, yet in saying passion we have not said the last word.
The text asks whether the truth may be that a poet expresses more than the rest of the world because he sees more. The text says much of the effect of Tennyson’s Crossing the Bar, one of his most admirable pictures of motion, depends upon the monosyllabic verbs.
