About this book

Island creation stories and daring contests share space in this 1916 collection of Hawaiian legends. W. D. Westervelt begins by comparing traditions about migration and ancestry across the Pacific. Wakea and Papa appear under related names in different island groups, and one account explains the heavens, rain, land and sea through the parts of a gourd. These passages show how stories connect family origins, places and the forces of nature.

The collection also turns to human cunning. Iwa, a young thief, wins King Umi's attention by obtaining treasured objects, including a sacred stone axe guarded by two women. His feats lead to a contest against six rivals. Readers interested in folklore will find both accounts of gods and lively tales of skill, with explanations of sacred restrictions and the importance of chiefly rank woven into the storytelling.
