About this book
Te Tohunga is a book with the subtitle The Ancient Legends and Traditions of the Maoris, orally collected and pictured by W. Dittmer. The contents list names, among others, Tiki the ancestor of mankind, the creation of Hawaiki, the poi-dance and the creation of the stars. The writer says that a part only of the legends is contained in the book, and that it will suffice to keep alive what was received from tattooed friends.
A telling about Mahuika says that Maui alone had the courage to go to Mahuika to ask her for one of her fingers. Maui overcomes his fear and asks Mahuika, "will you give me some of your fire?" The text calls Mahuika, surrounded by fire, terrible to behold. A passage about spirits says that they wail aloud and lacerate themselves after the fashion of the mourners of this world, with sharp splinters of volcanic glass (mata-tuhua).
