Lessons in Music Form is a standard textbook by Percy Goetschius (1853-1943), the American music theorist who taught at the Institute of Musical Art, forerunner of the Juilliard School, and trained a generation of American composers. The book systematically explains the structures of Western music, from the phrase and period to sonata form. Goetschius’s theory texts were the bedrock of American conservatory training for decades.
