About this book
Letters from a Farmer in Pennsylvania, to the Inhabitants of the British Colonies is by John Dickinson, with an historical introduction by R. T. H. Halsey. The contents list twelve letters, and a Letter of Thanks from the Town. One passage says the essays, popularly known as the Farmer's Letters, were published in book form in Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Williamsburgh, London and Dublin, and that Franklin helped have them translated into French.
In the letters, Dickinson looks at the duties that an act of parliament imposed on paper and glass imported into the colonies. He explains that where the buyer is not permitted to get such goods elsewhere, the seller becomes the collector of the tax for the power that imposed it, so the buyer pays the duty. The same passage adds that town meetings and assemblies vied with each other in resolutions of thanks.
