About this book
The Olivia Letters presents some history of Washington City over forty years through the letters of a newspaper correspondent. The contents list subjects including a soldier’s burial, political advice, state associations, a reception, and the Senate. A letter describes beautiful spring weather in Washington marred by clouds of dust sweeping across the avenues and nearly, if not quite, ruining new bonnets and dresses.
An account credits Mrs. Woodhull, it is said, with discovering that women are entitled to the ballot under the rulings of the fourteenth and fifteenth amendments to the Constitution. The members of the Judiciary Committee are described as rather slow in getting to their seats.
