About this book
The introduction describes Lewis Carroll telling a story while rowing up and down a river, accompanied by dipping oars and rippling waters. The childhood account says that a great change came when the boy was eleven, with Sir Robert Peel presenting his father with the Crown living of Croft.
The account describes Mr. Dodgson's parish as including Croft and the neighboring hamlets of Halnaby, Dalton and Stapleton. Charles Dodgson is described as pursuing anatomy and physiology, receiving a skeleton and obtaining books for his studies. The discussion of Sylvie and Bruno says that one of Lewis Carroll's special objects in writing the story was a sort of tardy appreciation of the much-despised boy.
