About this book
A summer evening at the Château d'Angleur gives way to alarming news as Europe approaches war. Glenna Lindsley Bigelow records life in Liége during the German invasion of Belgium in 1914, keeping a dated journal for her family while travel and communication become difficult. Her account begins among gardens, dinner guests and political rumors, then follows the disruption of a household caught close to the fighting.
The diary brings the civilian experience into focus through small, immediate scenes. Fourteen people shelter in a candlelit cellar during rifle fire, servants react in sharply different ways, and a Zeppelin appears outside the window. Alongside these observations are accounts of damaged homes, military demands and the care of wounded soldiers. Readers interested in the First World War can find a personal record of fear, uncertainty and daily adjustments, written from within the occupied city.
