About this book
An architecture student in Paris finds himself working at the American Embassy when war breaks out in 1914. Eric Fisher Wood records the sudden pressure on its staff as frightened travelers seek money, advice and a way home. His account draws on letters and diaries written during seven months of embassy duties, visits to the front and travel carrying diplomatic dispatches.
The observations range from the battles of the Marne and the Aisne to the practical work of the American Ambulance. In the hospital passages, Wood describes volunteer training, stretcher arrangements and the transport of wounded soldiers from railway stations to hospitals. He declares sympathy for France while explaining his effort to record events fairly. Readers interested in the first months of the First World War can follow both military developments and the daily demands of relief work.
