About this book
The narrator of Life and Adventures of Calamity Jane gives her maiden name as Marthy Cannary and remembers a childhood fondness for adventure, outdoor exercise and horses. The account describes a journey to Virginia City during which rough mountain trails required wagons to be lowered over ledges by hand with ropes. The narrator recalls dangerous stream crossings involving quicksands, boggy ground and water swollen by heavy rains.
The narrator reports making a round trip every two days, a performance considered good riding in that country. The account dates the narrator's first public engagement at the Palace Museum in Minneapolis to January 20th, 1896.
